Buy Wheelchair Wisely

Before buying a wheelchair, a patient should first explore all options. Several things to consider before investing in a wheelchair include:

  • does the wheelchair meet the needs of your specific condition
  • wheelchair category
  • size (bariatric wheelchair, standard wheelchair or transport folding wheelchair)
  • accessories (come complete or have to purchase additionally)
  • manufacturer’s warranties
  • folding or non-folding
  • transport or standard
  • lightweight or ultra lightweight
  • level of comfort (additional sitting cushions, padded or not, backrest or no backrest)
  • upholstery type (nylon, vinyl, leather, textile)
  • wheel type
  • with armrests or without
  • desk armrest or full armrest
  • with leg rests or without
  • frame type
  • weight of the product
  • wheelchair weight capacity

Wheelchair Sizing and Dimensions

Seat width is the first thing to look for when selecting the right mobility aid. It is a very personal feature and should be chosen by the user. Do you require 16, 17 or 18 inches?

Seat depth is the second most important thing to consider when buying a wheelchair. Depth is measured from the front of the seat to its back. Most standard wheelchairs come with a seat depth of 16 inches.

Seat to floor height is another important measurement, defined mostly by the patient’s height and personal preferences.

Pay attention to back height and the desired level of back support.

Armrests or no armrests, armrest length, padding – all of that is a matter of personal preference. Go ahead and try sitting in a wheelchair with no armrests. Are you comfortable resting your arms in your lap?

Legrests. Do you like your legs to be supported at all times? Make sure to decide on that factor before you submit your order.
